The CoronaMelder app has been developed to help fight the spread of coronavirus. The app keeps track of when users have been within close range of one another for a longer period of time. If a CoronaMelder user tests positive for COVID-19, they can choose to alert other app users. App users who get an alert can then get tested and avoid unknowingly infecting others.

If, for example, the graph shows that people in their sixties represent 12% of the Dutch population (grey bar) and that this same group represents 10% of the people in the Netherlands who have died from COVID-19 (blue bar), that means there are proportionately fewer deaths from COVID-19 among people in their sixties. The graph is updated daily and includes all deaths since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Please note that RIVM groups COVID-19 deaths among people younger than 50 together; the low numbers could otherwise be traceable back to individual people.

What does this mean?

Progression over time

The RIVM monitors the spread of infectious diseases in many ways. This is also the case for COVID-19. One of these ways is to look at persons exhibiting symptoms that could indicate an infection. The RIVM does this with the Infectieradar.

Everyone in the Netherlands can take part in the Infectieradar. Participants self-report once a week if they have (had) a fever or other symptoms. Even if participants don't have any symptoms they pass this on to us. This way, signals of an increase or decrease in the spread of the virus are picked up earlier.

When someone is infected with COVID-19, the municipal health service (GGD) tries to find out where they got it from and who they recently had contact with. The purpose is to discover whether the virus has also been transmitted to any other people.

Contact tracing by the municipal public health service (GGD)

Care professionals with COVID-19 can infect their patients, so monitoring care professionals’ health can help contain the spread of the disease. This means keeping track of the number of care professionals who are infected with coronavirus and the number who report ill. This data also helps the healthcare system cope with increases in workload.

Sentinel surveillance (care professionals)

Data on the movement of people can indicate how the coronavirus is spreading. The aim is to show this per municipality.

The compliance monitor provides insight into the degree to which people are able to follow the coronavirus measures.

RIVM routinely collects data from behavioural studies that shed light on trends in compliance with and support for the basic rules that apply, like washing hands, staying home and getting tested if you have symptoms.

Mortality in week 8 lower than expected

This graph shows the total number of deaths per week. The actual number of deaths is compared to the number of deaths predicted based on the figures from preceding years. The light blue line, drawn within its range of uncertainty, shows the number of deaths predicted over the year. The dark blue line shows the number of actual deaths.

Every week the national office Statistics Netherlands (CBS) publishes data on the total number of deaths and compares this to the predicted number of deaths, corrected for extreme temperatures, epidemics, etc. If more deaths occur than predicted, these are considered excess deaths. This graph may show a more complete picture of COVID-19 related deaths than the numbers reported by the GGD because not everyone who dies from COVID-19 has been tested for it.
